Stephen Harper Trying To Use Bill C-25 To Legislate Away The Right To Exist For Some Mi’ckmaq First Nations People

With Bill C-25, the Qalipu Mi’ckmaq First Nation Act, Stephen Harper and his Conservative Government of Canada are seeking to stop those Mi’ckmaq denied their right to be recognised as Mi’ckmaq legal remedy in the court system.

What is up Canada? Why do Canadians continue to pretend to care what happens to our First Nation’s People in their fight to be recognised and treated as sovereign independent nations sharing a land mass, lakes, rivers,  streams and surrounding waters? How can we stand idle as our government not only follows in the traditions and laws of our European forefathers,  but creates new laws to steal even the little rights, dignity, culture and autonomy,  that our First Nations were left with after colonization? Canadians for the most part think that the First Nation’s people are an ungrateful bunch of lazy drunks and drug abusers  that are sucking the life out of our country’s economy; most Canadians believe this for 2 reasons.  The first is because Canada teaches a biased history founded and based on lies. The second is because it makes it much easier for the average Canadian to absolve themselves of any responsibility for the abhorrent conditions many of these people are forced to live in and justify holding fast to what we have stolen from them in the past and what we know we are going to try to steal from them in the future.

Canada ignores its injustices to these people both in the past and present and demands that all First Nations renegotiate new deals with Canada even though Canada has not delivered on one treaty it originally signed with the First Nations without having to be taken to court for first, with these cases going on for years, some for generations. First we stuck our First Nations in remote areas, the harsh lands where no European wanted to live and we kept what we thought was the choice farming land for ourselves. No one was thinking oil and gas back then and travel to the interior was long, hard and dangerous before the railroad was built, the car was invented and flight for humans became a possibility. Once it became obvious to all that the interior of Canada that was now First Nation land by treaty and grant held most of the natural resources (coal, gas, oil, tin etc.), as well as most of this country’s much sought after precious metals and precious and semi  precious stones, we as a country and as a people sought to reclaim those lands, or at least control the people and the rights to develop  the lands for ourselves. Why can’t Canadians  grasp that we are no better than the government that we  elect?  When we say that the government is not living up to its end of  treaty obligations with First Nations, that we are talking about ourselves and should be ashamed of our treatment of First Nation people. Why can’t Canadians grasp that it we that are responsible for the poverty suffering and 3rd world living conditions most First Nation’s people  are force to live in (unsanitary drinking water, no modern plumbing etc.?  We as Canadians have to understand that when we support and elect governments that ignore, impede and pass laws to further delay and put aside First Nations rights and freedoms, that it is you and me, the average Canadian that are the root cause of First Nation suffering and abuse!

With Bill C-25, the Qalipu Mi’ckmaq First Nation Act,  Stephen Harper and his Conservative Government of Canada are seeking to stop those Mi’ckmaq  denied their right to be recognised as Mi’ckmaq any  legal remedy in the court system.   The harper government is trying to backtrack on yet another commitment it has made to a First Nation, claiming they spell a rat, because too many Mi’ckmaq  are coming forward to claim their status and be recognised as First Nations people. The truth is that the Harper government did not do its homework as usual and thought that they could get some quick, cheap political points by recognising a band of First Nations thought to be just about extinct and would cost the government very little in terms of land or cost of services afforded First Nations and their people.  What did happen was that because this governments mistake in its estimations of how many descendants of the Mi’ckmaq were still alive and how many would come out and wish to file applications of recognition the government decided to change the rules in the middle of the process and make when the applicant for recognition determine what kind of proof was needed to validate that persons request for recognition, creating an easier proof threshold requirement before the date and an almost impossible proof threshold to meet after the date, denying over 100,000 possible Mi’ckmaq the right be recognised as First Nations people. To add insult to injury this government realising that with the way this file was handled they do not have a legal leg to stand on under the Indian Act, the constitution of Canada, or the Canadian Charter of Rights And Freedoms decides to cover their ass with Bill C-25 The Qalipu Mi’ckmaq First Nations Act.  There is no other Bill or legislation like this governing any other First nation in Canada and its sole purpose is to deny these 100,000 people their right challenge the government in court if and when they are denied their right to exist and claim, their heritage. The government anticipating the cost of such legal battles feels is moving to legislate the right of these 100,000 individual Canadians citizens right to their day in court away from them denying them due process of law and the oversight of the courts and its justice.

What is up with us as Canadians, Canada, that we can allow for the injustices that we know that our European forefathers committed on the original people of this land to continue and the debt still owing and obligations owed by signed treaties  to go unfulfilled and not paid? What kind of people does it make us to stand silently on the sidelines and watch and do nothing to help as  government after Canadian government adds more injustices unto the pile of hurt, persecution and oppression that already exists? Our forefathers stole their lands not with a fair fight, but through lies and deception, trickery and fraud.  Our forefathers sought to take away their culture, their religion, their language and in most cases they just about succeeded and now we as Canadians seek not to make things as right as possible, but seek to insult these people by playing them for fools as we are doing to the Mi’ckmaq by telling them they are not who they are, because in some cases they sought recognition from us too late, after our imposed deadline for such recognition and the time for being recognised as a First nation Mi’ckmaq is passed. After robbing and tricking these people out of everything they owned, are we now going to compound this by denying them to right to be recognised by who they are? What is up Canada, what gives us this right?

First the Europeans came to this land and found its indigenous people living here in what is now Canada. These First Nations people of Canada welcomed the Europeans with open arms, teaching them how to live off of the land and in fact survive. The First Nations people who were hunter gathers, following their sources of food, trapping hunting and fishing had no idea that the European settlers had not come in peace to trade as they had lied, but as was their practice of doing to every indigenous people they encountered on their travels they had really come to take their ancestral homelands  and all that it possessed in terms of natural resources and convert its people to Christianity by any means necessary.

First contact with the European settlers/invaders when they landed on the shores of what is now called the shores of what is now called Newfoundland, Labrador and Nova Scotia was enough to kill off a good number of the Mi’ckmaq  First Nation’s People; racism and the fear of being discriminated against and abused drove what was remaining of these proud people underground and out of the sight and minds of their racist oppressors and our forefathers. Afraid to be recognized as being of aboriginal decent for fear of persecution that kept them from being able to find work and support themselves they remained underground pretending to be white.  Inter marriage between the French  and the Mi’ckmaq people put the final touches on the masks these First nations were forced to dawn if they were to survive and in time allowed them to blend in seamlessly with their oppressors, fully assimilated into the European culture. What was left of  the Mi’ckmaq people were safe now, because they were being mistakenly taken as being of totally European decent. The Mi’ckmaq may have gained safety from the abuse and racial prejudice of the day afforded other First Nations people by disappearing from sight, but they vanished as a people and with them went their rights to land and the knowledge of their continued existence as a nation of people rather than a few hundred survivors.   many Mi’ckmaq are choosing not to come forward and claim their status as Mi’ckmaq.   the Mi’ckmaq became so invisible as a people who Joey Smallwood one time premiere of Newfoundland many years later wrongly advised the federal government that, “There are no Indians on the island of Newfoundland.”

Todays Canadians the benefactors of our European forefathers treachery, theft and murder are more concerned how to hold on to what our forefathers have stolen in terms of land and  water and the rights to develop and work  them, then we are at the prospect of honoring treaties, land claims through honest and fair negotiations. Todays Canadians are the benefactors of our European forefathers and therefore make us the profiteers of  what would  be considered crimes against humanity today and yet we as a nation and a people seek to justify what our forefathers did to the Mi’ckmaq and all aboriginal peoples, in order to marginalize our guilt and lessen our obligation to negotiate a settlement  in good faith that somehow tries to  at least put right in some small way all of the hurt and damage our forefathers caused all the First Nations they found inhabiting this land.  Canadians go along with their governments on every level when the demand proof of their hereditary right to seek what we know is theirs by treaties signed by our forefathers and never honored, or never signed away by the First Nation, but legislatively stolen from them and so become not only the benefactor of what was a crime against humanity, but become an active supporter and participant in what amounts to ongoing effort to maintain the status quo.

As in this case of this Mi’ckmaq Nation I think that the Canadian government and all honest, fair-minded Canadians know that the Mi’ckmaq were here before our forefathers were and that all of the land and waters and everything found on the land and in the waters belongs rightfully to them and any land claims honored, or treaties they seek honored are nothing to ask for in terms of moving the reconciliation process forward.  The Mi’ckmaq know as do we as Canadians  that to even question whether or not the displaced Mi’ckmaq, a nomadic hunter gatherer aboriginal people who were displaced and nearly wiped off the face of the earth by our ancestors were actually  on the island of Newfoundland before the European settlers came and to prove that they in fact have existing ties to the land to prove that they are Mi’ckmaq is  a stalling tactic an insult to these people I contend a continuation of the act of genocide perpetrated on these people by our forefathers.  This is a stalling tactic that has been used by governments in Canada to deny all First Nations  their autonomy, their land claims and equal nation status that has already be guaranteed to them since the first treaties were signed and the Mi’ckmaq  First Nation is being treated no different. They have however suffered a worse fate for having sided with the French against the British. When the French eventually lost the war the Mi’ckmaq behind for the British to persecute and punish. The Mi’ckmaq were thought of  by the British as untrustworthy, enemy savages the object of governmental scorn, discrimination and mistrust.

In closing I would say that I am always astounded when I hear government officials talk about the burden that First Nations put on our economy, when in truth it is all theirs and we are the profiteers of subjugation, oppression attempted genocide and treachery.  We did not come to this land and fight the people we found here, take the land as our victorious spoils. We came here waving a white flag of peace, with an offer of peace, trade and coexistence as separate, but equal Nations sharing the same lands.  We signed treaties and made deals under the flag of peace all the while knowing that we had no intention of honoring any of the treaties and none of the land agreements the fact is we wanted it all for ourselves. no we were no conquerors we were more like the sneak thief, the liar, the heartless con man who dupes whole trusting communities out of what is rightfully theirs leaving in his wake, suffering, pain and anguish.

With every treaty, the Indian Act and all amendments to it and all acts governing our First Nations have been documents used to subjugate and strip the First Nations of their autonomy, their sovereignty as independent nations and all of their rights as a people. There has not been one single effort by any government brought forward to do right by First Nations, but instead have been drafted to ensure that all of our laws remain the priority and that all of their laws need to be okayed by our just to be legal and that their  protestations are squashed in legalese and a rig process designed remove, or at the very least delay their right to a day in court, as we are now seeing with the Harper government’s Bill C-25 The Qalipu Mi’ckmaq First Nations Act.

Take heed of the landmark court Supreme Court of Canada case that ruled the Tsilhqot’in First Nation has the title to its land in south central British Colombia. This case has implications for hundreds of unresolved land title claims in the province and for the projects that many First Nations groups oppose, such as the Northern Gateway pipeline.  Originally all the First nations wanted was to be consulted and dealt with in good faith, but rather that do this the government forced their hand and now the government of Canada finds itself not only having to consult, but get consent from First Nations. What is up Canada, is the government of Canada ready  to negotiate in good faith yet and are we ready to see that they do?

Stephen Harper’s Conservative Government Addicted To Power

The Political Power Junkie

The Political Power Junkie

If it can be said that politicians in general all around the world start off as casual users of  the ambitious professional’s drug of preference and find themselves inevitably  addicted to that drug called power, the  Conservative Party of Canada is a nest of full-blown junkies.  Very few political power junkies thought that the drug they chose to use casually would become an all-consuming problem that they eventually would not be able do without, or could never get enough of. Not for one second did any political power junkie envision that they would eventually see themselves  craving to use their choice of drug every minute of the day and be willing to sell out Canada and the people of their community to acquire another fix. The use of power is in my opinion the only driving force behind any of  the policies, new laws and changes to old laws being made right now by,  Stephen Harper, the PMO and his Conservative Party of Canada’s ministerial MPs, secretaries to the ministers,  and even the party’s back benchers.  This political party in my opinion are no longer casual users of the drug, but full-blown junkies and as such will do anything to secure more of it for themselves, even if it means stealing it from government agencies, parliamentary oversight watchdogs, Canadian citizens, or even from someone within their rank and file.

What might have started as a dream to rise to the top of the political hierarchy to do good for mankind starting with those in their own city, then for those in their province and then finally advancing to do great things for everyone in the whole country, somehow gets lost in the quest to find what they have gotten addicted to and that is power. In all fairness I do not think that it is solely the affliction of those in the Conservative Party of Canada, but right now the Conservative Party of Canada is responsible making the laws that you and I are being forced to live with and are refusing help with their problem from anyone and I for one find the situation disturbing and dangerous. Addicted to power those young ambitious politicians who entered politics to help their fellow citizens in Canada’s cities, provinces and territories find that such idealistic goals no longer matter, or perhaps these once decent people wanting to do good are now telling themselves, “We will put our dreams of helping those in our cities, provinces, country and the world aside momentarily and concentrate on amassing all the power we can, in order to bigger and better things later.  As life in a democratic capitalistic country often means 10% of the population lives extremely well while the 90% is forced to live just above the, poverty line or below it, democratic capitalistic governments are starting to see the same discontent among the 90% that toppled the monarchy and autocratic rulers and made democracy the preferred way to be governed by the 90%.

Whether or not democracy is to survive as the choice of governance for the 90%, I believe rests entirely on how long it takes for politicians and 10% to grasp that without the principles, and spirit of democracy, the rights and freedoms and  guarantees of equality under the law  for all citizens in all things; without the right to vote and chose who governs them in a fair and transparent process, democracy turns into  a cruel joke and reverts back to dictatorship, autocracy and even monarchy and all that had been gained politically through the blood and deaths of countless citizens seeking a better more fulfilling life free of oppression, will be lost forever. The power that was taken out of the hands of dictators and kings, queens and warlords and put into the hands of the 90% was what democracy was all about and what defines the very core ideology of democracy and separates it from all other forms of governance, without its core principles democracy cannot survive, because it has no foundation, or basis in reality, it reverts back to the dreams and hopes of a nation’s oppressed population.

A quick look through the history of the world shows the unpleasant fate awaiting leaders who place themselves above the laws of their countries, or empires and ignore the needs of the people they rule or govern over. Be they democratic  governments, monarchies, dictatorships, or autocracies,  in every case the struggle for equality in all things by the 90% ended with those oppressive leaders being removed from power in one way, or another.  In the past before the vote, before democracy, the removal process of abusive leaders called for the death of the offending body of politicians, king, queen, religious leader, or ruling family and in some countries in 2014 they are still removing oppressive, dictatorial leaders and regimes by killing them. Although the Western Alliance  thinks it unthinkable and unacceptable that somebody would target one of their leaders, track them down and kill them, it is guilty of having  removed a couple of leaders they didn’t like by hunting them down, putting a wanted dead or alive contract on their heads which eventually led to their demise.  The deaths of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden were examples this  practice to which Canada not only fully supported and encouraged, but actively participated in.  Fortunately for our leaders we  who live under supposedly democratic rule in the west do not apply the same rules of ensuring democracy at home as we do abroad. Ensuring democracy domestically in Canada means they will not be hunted down and killed by bounty hunters seeking to make 25 million dollars for proof of their demise, no coup des tats will be waged to get rid of them, instead Canadians will use the electoral process  to remove our unwanted governments. As we did in Quebec to rid ourselves of Pauline Marois and her racist, divisive and oppressive government and as the population of Ontario did when they refused to elect an oppressive, austere Conservative government led by Tim Hudak. If the end result of mistreating one’s population always leads to the loss of power for the offending leaders and governments then I am always left wondering why it is that this government and all governments in Canada that have been entrusted with a majority government always end up thinking that they are above the law and out of the reach of their populations, when in the end no matter how much power they amass it will be the 90% who decide their fate on election day and not the

The  Conservative Party of |Canada, led by Steven Harper  is in my opinion the most arrogant, oppressive, bull-headed, and non transparent government that Canada has had the misfortune of trusting with a majority government.  They have systematically turned their ministers into non unchallengeable despots, giving them despotic powers like stripping natural Canadian citizens of their citizenship, deciding which countries are terrorist states and deciding whether or not a proposed project is environmentally safe or not.  It was said  on the floor of the House of Commons , during questions and comments that this type of unchallengeable power is tantamount to what one expect to find happening in a Banana Republic, but not in a democratic county like Canada.  This government has called  environmental activists terrorists, called into question the integrity of the head of Elections Canada and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada; since coming to power with its majority government it has fired and vilified any department head responsible for providing oversight and which reported to parliament that didn’t report favorably concerning their practices for example the Parliamentary Budget Officer, the Privacy Commissioner and the one time Auditor General and highly respected Sheila Fraser.   This government has ignored Canada’s First Nation’s people in everything from obligatory consultations in matters their education and health to the development and protection of their lands even refusing to call a Royal commission to find out what happened to over 600 missing, or murdered aboriginal girls and women.  This government has attacked unions and charities using their changes to Canada’s tax system to hurt them. This government has ignored the wishes of its people at every turn and the passing of the Gateway Pipeline over the protestations of  the First Nations the people of BC where the pipeline is to be installed said no is only further proof of their arrogance and ignoring of what their people want.

The Conservative Party of Canada needs a time out, they need to be removed from power and removed from the source of their addiction, the 10%.  Taking all of this into consideration I wonder just how many fights with how many people the Conservative Party of Canada think they can fight all at the same time and still get enough votes to win a federal election in 2015.   They have in my opinion placed themselves above the law and have had their hands slapped good and hard by the Supreme Court of Canada three times, but none of this changes how they go about doing business.  If Stephen Harper and his Conservative Party Of Canada were to lose power, the 10% would abandon them like a pusher would ignore the pleas of a jonesing junkies looking for a fix without cash.  I think it is time the citizens of Canada helped these Conservative Party of Canada power junkies by removing them from office so that they will be forced once again to join the human race and learn to live without the rush that abusing power gives and hopefully return to the ideals that probably made them enter politics I the first place to help the people of their communities, cities, province selflessly and in the process helping their country and making a positive difference in the world that they are a part of and live in.

Brad Butt And The Lie That Was Not A Lie And What It Says About Canadian Politics And The Conservative Party Of Canada

The Canadian House of Commons is the only place where "parliamentary procedure" states that a lie is not really a lie and so as a result a liar is not a liar!

The Canadian House of Commons is the only place where “parliamentary procedure” states that a lie is not really a lie and so as a result a liar is not a liar!

The Brad Butt lie may be old news to most reporters and a lot of  Canadians, but to me it is one of the most important scandals of the year bar none, because it fully exposed the depth that the Conservative Party of Canada is willing :

1. To stoop to get a bad bill through parliament. Abuse parliamentary procedure to help them accomplish the impossible which is turn a deliberate lie into a case of a simple misunderstanding. 2. To take advantage of their majority status to undermine the democratic spirit of this country.

To go to ensure that they remain in power, by rigging elections, instead of keeping old supporters and winning new voters with policies that are inclusive and take all Canadians into consideration, laws that are fair to all Canadians and not just the wealthy and other conservatives and a platform of governance that all Canadians can support, feel fairly done by and could live with and under.

In my opinion, it has become obvious to me and I am sure Canadians that this government led by Stephen Harper does not understand that lies are lies no matter how many rules of parliamentary procedure, or slick tricks they use to cover them up.  Further more we the Canadian citizens and voters are not bound by the same rules that govern the opposition parties in the House of Commons which forbid the calling of an MP a liar, or saying that they misled the members of  the  House of Commons  intentionally, when that is exactly what they did.  Thanks to CPAC televising the goings on in the House of Commons live most interested Canadians have heard this whole story from the beginning and understand that Tori MP Brad Butt did stand up in the House of Commons and deliberately  and intentionally mislead the House at 2 different times, during a debate on Bill C-23,”The Fair Elections Act,” when he said that he personally witnessed election fraud taking place from beginning when the cards were delivered to the lobby of his apartment building, to its ultimate end at the polling station where he witnessed the fraud going on. I was left with 2 possible reasons that MP Brad Butt stood back up in the house of Commons 2 weeks later and  admitted publicly that he was a liar and I would like to know which one is true and they are:

1. Brad Butt a pathological liar, who can not control what comes out of his mouth and that no longer is rational enough to see that telling lies in general is not a good thing and should be resigning his seat and seeking psychiatric help for his problem, because he is no longer mentally fit to take part in the debates that make up the laws that govern Canadians and Canada.

2. Brad Butt realised either by himself, or with some help that he had witnessed election fraud, a crime in this country and did not report it to anyone and in fact allowed it to happen and did not only nothing to prevent it, but also failed to report it’s happening.

I for one believe that Brad Butt only changed his story which to me was an admission that he was a liar, because he was made to realise that an investigation was being undertaken to understand why he a member of parliament would see the act of voter fraud taking place and not do his duty as a law-abiding citizen and member of parliament and report it? Brad Butt, decided that it was easier to wiggle out of situation, by apologizing publicly and saying it was never his intention to mislead the house and was over zealous and just trying to make a point. Brad Butt knowing that he would be protected by his corrupt cronies holding a majority status in  the House of Commons to vote him out of trouble took the cowardly way out and laughed in the face of Canadians refusing to really admit that he had lied and skirted having to take responsibility for his deceit.

The problem with what the Tories did as a political party to save Brad Butt is that:

1. The whole Brad Butt affair was televised and we voters are capable of seeing a lie and a cover up.

2.There is almost a computer in every house hold with people like me either writing about what we saw with our own eyes on CPAC, or tuning into an online news report by CBC, or CTV,  in our blogs, or Facebook and tweeting about on Twitter, the minute it happens.

3. We no longer have to take someone else’s word as to what was said or the sincerity of an apology , because we have seen it for ourselves live.

To watch the Conservative Party of Canada’s secretary to this minister and secretary to that minister along with their party house leader rise and support this obvious liar, no matter what the Speaker of the House said and no matter that his reasons for lying in the first place that he gave were obviously just a continuation of the lie, left me feeling that Brad Butt was not the only rotten apple in the Harper Conservative Party of Canada barrel.  I began to remember the circumstance surrounding the need to dissolve parliament and have the 2011 federal election and how the Harper government was found guilty of contempt of parliament; in that circumstance this party did not have a majority status and could not vote their way out of trouble like they think that they did for Brad Butt, but they did get away with it and were voted back into power with the majority government that we are now suffering under.

We may not take to the street in Canada like they do in Ukraine and other places, but does that mean that we are not entitled to our franchise, our very right to vote in free, fair and transparent elections? Given that all indicators seem to be pointing directly at the Conservative Party of Canada’s election campaign headquarters in Guelph Ontario  as the of the misleading phone calls, or “Robo Call Scandal”, where the alias character Pierre Poutine directed over 6,000 voters to the wrong poling station in Guelph on election night 2011, do you not find it particularly arrogant and contemptuous of Canadians that the Conservative Party of Canada would:

  • Bring forward a bill titled the Fair Elections Act?
  • To try to limit the investigating powers of the head of elections Canada into illegal fund-raising during a campaign when it was members of their party that kept being cited for wrong doing?
  • Try to continue giving themselves an unfair advantage in raising funds through phone calling?
  • Try to eliminate the voting rights of people who do not tend to vote for them, by taking away methods used to prove their residence and eligibility to vote.

Brad Butt’s lie is important and relevant today as it was yesterday, because it represents a version of the truth that is employed and accepted on Parliament Hill as the way to communicate with each other and to Canadians.  It is a loop-hole in Parliamentary procedure that allows for a deliberate lie to be called a slip of the tongue or an honest mistake and there by allow the politician who would lie to Canadians in order to convince Canadians of the need for what their party is trying to get accepted into law, to go unpunished. It will get harder to convince children that a lie is not a good thing, when our leaders get away with it and use it as a standard form of communication.

Is Public Works Minister Diane Finley Just A Lousy Shopper, Or Is She Really This Foolish?

Is Diane Finley just a lousy shopper, or Is she really that foolish ?

Is Diane Finley just a lousy shopper, or Is she really this foolish?

In a time when Canadians are being asked by the Conservative Government of Canada to tighten their belts and sharpen their pencils and learn to do more with less, is it responsible government to turn down a 500 million dollar savings on the procurement on a Polar Icebreaker?  Does Public Works Minister Diane Finley‘s rejection of an offer made by Quebec’s Davie shipyard to save the government and therefore the Canadian tax payer a guaranteed half a billion dollars on a new icebreaker make sense, in a time when the average Canadian has not seen a substantial raise in over 10 years and most paychecks do not cover the monthly bills?  In a time when collective bargaining has been put on hold while  Canada recovers from a still fragile economic position according to the Harper government and unions have just about been outlawed, because Stephen Harper and his Conservative Party of Canada view unions and their members as a terrorist threat, to be hunted down, and wiped out by any means necessary lest Canada be forced back into the depths of the dreaded recession is it a reasonable position for Public Works Minister Diane Finley to turn away  a guaranteed saving of 500 million dollar  to build a Polar Icebreaker, because she does not believe it is possible to do and is obstinately  refusing investigate the facts?  In a time when the Harper government claims it has no choice but to renege on a deal it struck with federal civil servant via collective bargaining in which the employees respected their end, because they claim it is unsustainable for them due to a slow recovering economy that Public Works Minister Diane Finley’s reject an offer by Quebec’s Davie shipyard to save the government half a billion dollars on a new icebreaker; an offer that they are willing to guarantee?  This is the type of hypocrisy and ill-informed decision-making that Canadians have been forced to endure since Harper came to power with his strong, secure conservative government.  The only thing that this government has been able to procure for Canadians is a guaranteed scandal a day and the cost for such entertainment is billions of dollars, the safety of our troops put on the back-burner and the majority of working Canadians having to go into debt for the most simplest of living as the price of gas, food and lodging raise way above the ability of their monthly take home pay.

I once believed that this government was only incompetent when it came to large military procurements such as the F-35 Fighter Jet fiasco, or the Close Combat Vehicle, (CCV) Project worth $2 billion cancellation, but now that Prime Minister Harper has put the lady in charge of ordering office supplies in charge of all military  procurements as well, it becomes painfully obvious that it is not just one member of the party that would rather over spend by millions of dollars and endure delays of up to 10 years on delivery  for something they claim Canada needs right away, but that this a systemic problem that deeply rooted in this party’s core principles. What Public Works Minister Diane Finley has said basically, if not literally amounts to  this, “I do not care if we do not have a signed contract with anyone, we have an agreement in principle. I do not care how many hundreds of millions of dollars the government can save Canadian tax payers, by using Quebec’s  Davies ship yard, because they do not require new tooling, because our party has already assigned the work to Seaspan shipyard in North Vancouver.  I do not care that Canadians will have to wait over a decade for the, “Diefenbaker” to be built because Seaspan is already working on 2 ships for the navy and would not even start to build the Diefenbaker until those 2 ships were built and they have retooled, because Davies shipyard had their chance to bid and they failed to win. Finally just for the record we do not care that the Davie yard is the biggest yard in Canada or does not need retooling, has guaranteed their price and can start building the ship right away, or that they have recently finished a 130-metre offshore construction vessel for a Norwegian customer, named the Cecon Pride, that it was delivered on time for $200 million, or that the yard is now building two similar ships; well, we don’t have a contract, but we have made an award under that procurement based on the credibility, the viability, the reliability of the companies at the time.” “They had a chance to compete. At the time, they weren’t successful.”

Neither Public Works Minister Diane Finley, or Prime Minister Stephen Harper have given any reasonable explanation as to why this ship has to be built by Seaspan shipyard out in BC for more money and a delayed time of start, instead of using Davies shipyard in Quebec for a guaranteed price which is  1/2 a billion dollars less than any other offer and suggest an immediate start time is available, but this lack of reasoning’s has opened the door to my imagination and the 2015 federal election date keeps popping into my head. I asked myself is the conservative party through this contracts buying western votes and support? There is not one government that has been in power with a majority government that has not used its procurement power to buy its continued support of voters who have supported them in the past and rewarding these voters by giving companies lucrative contracts that provide job opportunities for these communities is just one way that they accomplish this task. Having said that though when a government decides that it is okay to screw around with the  best practices of our military and search and rescue procurement policies endangering the lives of our men and women who put their lives on the line to defend this country and keep its population safe, I say that they have crossed the line and gone too far. The Canadian armed forces will not get the replacement fighter jet on time due to delays and sky rocketing costs; the Canadian armed forces will not get the close combat vehicle they were supposed to get because this government cancelled the project so they can balance the budget in 2015, like they promised; the Canadian coast guard will not get its new polar icebreaker anytime soon because this government wishes the ship built where it will benefit them most in votes for the 2015 election and I say this government is playing Russian roulette with our lives for votes.

This is not Bev Oda paying $16 for orange juice and changing a word on a document to get her way; this is deliberately making and already dangerous job even more perilous, by continuing to make back door deals and ill-informed decisions that result in delays of getting much-needed equipment where it is needed in a timely fashion for our troops and now our coast guard. When you add to that the secondary matter of the billions of  tax payer dollars wasted by this government on failed attempts to procure everything from a paper clip to a jet fighter aircraft is it any wonder really that every social program in Canada is unsustainable?
